Navigating Medical Career Transitions with Confidence and Mindful Conversations

Many of my clients know that their job is no longer serving them.

It does not align with their values, the way they want to work, or meet their needs.

They do not feel fulfilled or valued. They want to make a change but struggle to tackle those decisions and fear tricky conversations, so staying with the current situation is often easier – not rock the boat.

They want to control their hours, have better balance, do medicine differently, and have healthy boundaries to live their best lives….with a fulfilling career where they feel valued and appreciated.

My clients often fear having tricky conversations and everything not going to plan. Worried they will accept something they don’t want to accept or be able to voice their needs. Allowing the needs of others to overrule their own.

Above all, they want to maintain good relationships with colleagues and show appreciation for the experience and support they have received. They don’t want to seem ungrateful. But at the same time, they know the current situation is not making them happy.

They realize that if they don’t act now, they will be in the same situation in 6, to 12 months. It will be even more difficult to have these conversations, make these decisions, and move on to something new and exciting.

I offer them a coaching space and time to consider their needs and motivation to change. They get support from me as their coach to navigate the relationships and conversations that can empower them to take the steps they want to in their careers.

By working together, they feel more confident to have those difficult conversations, change working patterns, hand in their notice, negotiate a new role on their terms…and meet their needs.

They can release the fear of the unknown and take control of the situation. Set their goals and meet them. Change the situation rather than the situation changing them.

Here are 5 key steps we work on together to tackle tricky conversations so they no longer have to avoid them…

1. Get clear on your needs

Getting clear on your needs and wants, and what your non-negotiables are helps you to express these to other people. Understanding not only what they are, what they look like, how they feel, and what they add to your life. Clarity on your needs, along with permitting yourself to prioritize these needs as you take your next step, is crucial to a successful transition out of your current situation.

2. Practice conscious communication

Think about what triggers you in conversations. What are those things you dread other people saying when you know you will act subconsciously and regret what you said? Start to explore the possibilities of the worst- and best-case scenarios and how you would like to respond and react consciously and mindfully.

3. Explore the other person’s needs

What is it that the other person in the conversation is looking for? How can you acknowledge these as you make what you want clear? Realizing that every conversation involves the connection between 2 people can help to humanize the experience and achieve a successful outcome.

4. Create an enabling environment

Think about the best environment you can create for yourself and the other person. What helps you be in the most positive and empowering mood you can be? Think about when, how, and where you can hold conversations so you give the best of yourself…and, simultaneously, make it as easy as possible for the other person to listen and hear you.

5. Reflect on your actions

Observe what has gone well for you and what could have been better. Are there ways you want to be more confident, clear, or conscious? How could you keep your motivations and needs at the forefront? Using affirmations can help reinforce behaviors and situations so they become second nature and stop being stumbling blocks.

By working together my clients can be more mindful as they transition and not let tricky conversations hinder moving forward to create their dream careers.
