5 Compelling Reasons It's Never Too Late for a Medical Career Change

Do you find yourself daydreaming about making a career change from your current medical career?

You wish you had more flexibility to be able to find time for your family or pursue other passions.

Maybe you want to create more ‘me time’ to reconnect with your physical and emotional health.

You may want to find social interactions around you that light you up and champion you through life.

Would you like to explore another pathway that feels more interesting and fulfilling?

Whatever your motivation, letting your inner critic stop you from turning your daydream into action can be easy.

The thoughts can creep in and hold you back – it took me a long time to get here - I studied for so long, and spent so much money to follow this specialty. On paper, my career looks amazing…I should be grateful.

Surely, it’s too late to make that career change?

I am here to tell you that it’s not too late to make that change and here are 5 reasons why:

1. The world has changed since you graduated – let your passions and priorities evolve too.

Think back to your time at med school and shortly after graduation. The world was a different place, and you were also likely a different person. Your priorities and values may have shifted. All the life experiences you have had since then may have changed your outlook on how you want to do medicine and how you want to live your best life. As the field of medicine continues to evolve, you can also allow yourself to evolve. Let your interests guide you to new and different opportunities so you can turn resentment into joy!

2. If you want to make a bigger impact – the time is now!

Imagine the impact you could make if you used the knowledge and experience you have already got to change the way you change other people’s lives. If you want to make a bigger impact don’t leave it to chance. If you want to be a role model for your loved ones, making a change now will give you more opportunities to do so. Taking control and making your dreams a reality will allow you to make the difference you want in the world and leave a legacy you will be proud of.

3. The further you get in your career, the less time you have to follow that passion you never pursued.

It’s easy to see medicine as a linear career -getting from A to B and then stopping. If you are at B, or just about to get there and are no longer sure that it aligns with your values - it’s infinitely better to make a shift now rather than waiting to look back regretfully. The longer you wait, the harder making a transition may become. Give yourself permission to create your own unique path.

4. Changing careers can add a new level of fulfillment and challenge to your life

Although change can be scary it can also be exciting. If you can embrace change and the sense of adventure it brings, you can see the opportunities it will bring for professional and personal growth. Adopt the attitude of being a life-long learner and see this next step to reconnect to your true self.

5. You deserve to be happy and healthy

Having a career that you want to get out of bed for in the morning is achievable! If your career negatively impacts your physical and emotional well-being, making a change now can help you find balance. By being mindful of your next career steps, you can be happy and healthy as you transition…and feel less guilty about it! It’s time to fill your cup to be your best version of yourself.

Today can be the first day of your transition out of full-time clinical medicine!
