During my first big career transition away from clinical medicine, I was largely focused on what my job looked like and whether I had made the right decision.
Coming from an environment where I constantly gave energy and time to patients meant I had lost sight of my health and well-being.
The demands for caring for other people meant that I often thought of myself last. My own health and self-care were not at the top of my list…and it took me a while to realize that it needed to be!
Fast forward a few years…and a few more career transitions and I have realized that part of the key to creating my dream flexible career…one where I can live the life I want..and make an impact in the world…is staying healthy and nurturing my well-being as I take the next step…or leap…into whatever direction comes next.
Embracing wellness in my career for others, my world, and myself has become a priority.
It has enabled me to make bold and exciting moves in my career confidently.
Any diversion or bump in the road no longer derails me.
Here are 3 reasons prioritizing your health and wellness is so important…and how it can help your career transition.
1. The journey is one of self-discovery
Start to explore the interplay between your own physical health and mental well-being and how this holds the key to building your capacity to deal with change. Any career change can face a few bumpy moments, but the more energy you have, the more you can overcome them and keep moving toward your goals. The more you can embrace the principles of health and well-being into your lifestyle, the easier it will be to impart this into lifestyle medicine, holistic health approaches, or any other field that lights you up.
For me, the transformative power of yoga became my prescription for self-awareness. Each time I hit my mat, it gives me that space to check in with my energy and connection with my body and find out what I need. It serves as a mirror of my internal health and well-being. For you, it might be a different practice, but the key is to find something that re-energizes you and aligns with your identity as a doctor and the type of medicine you want to share with the world.
2. Resilience can radiate
Resilience is about finding balance in an unbalanced world. For many physicians, resilience is part of the territory to coping with the challenges of clinical medicine. But the fabulous thing about this resilience is the ability to use it for good, to enhance it through prioritizing your own well-being, not as an afterthought, and to radiate it to your patients, colleagues, communities, and the world. Charge the batteries up and shine your light!
You can tap into and brighten that inner strength by placing your health and wellness at the heart of your career change. Your commitment to your own self-care can become a source of inspiration for others and help you to be the role model you want to be. This ripple effect can help you make a bigger impact and cultivating your wellness will inspire others to embark on their own journey.
3. True balance is achievable
Very often, as healers, we are walking a fine line between providing energy and care to others and healing or saving energy for ourselves. Prioritizing your own health and wellness during your next career change allows you to truly define your own balance and harmony. Imagine waking up every day with health and vitality and wanting to jump out of bed! Feeling excited about going to work, and still having that energy when you come home at the end of the day.
When you commit to ‘doing no harm’ to yourself it allows you to start writing the rules of balance on your own terms. To have more energy to have those difficult conversations, stick to those healthy boundaries, and be clear about how you want to walk on this earth…each day at a time.
